Leader Magazine
DECEMBER 1960.
FOREWORD by Colonel J.F. LAKE, MC.
The aim of our Regiment is to turn out potential leaders, who are well-grounded in discipline and basic military training, men who are reliable, mentally alert and capable of absorbing knowledge readily.
Are we achieving this object, and thus helping to build a strong and effective Regular Army? Let us look at our achievements in this respect over the past months.
The effectiveness of our academic Education is shown by the high percentage of Junior Leaders sitting for their Senior A.C.E., or studying for G.C.E. subjects.
The value of our Adventure Training is clearly shown by the number of Junior Leaders who have obtained their Bronze and Silver Certificates in the Duke of Edinburgh's Award Scheme in the minimum time, and by the magnificent effort of those who are attempting to complete the Gold award before they leave the Regiment.
Over 100 Junior Leaders are graduating at the end of the term and going forward to join the regiments of their choice. I am sure they would like to know how those who left us at the end of last term are faring. I have had many encouraging reports from individuals from all the Arms concerned, but I would like to quote from a letter which I received from Brigadier P.M.P. Hobson, DSO, Commander of Royal Signals Training Brigade at Catterick. I believe it sums up the situation in all arms very well:
"I am sure that you and your staff would like to know how the ex-Junior Leaders in our first intake from Tonfanau are shaping. You will be glad to hear that all Commanding Officers are well pleased with your lads, and they loose nothing in comparison with arrivals from Dendury. Their standard of kit and turn-out, and their general approach to training has been particularly commended. They seem to enjoy life and speak well of Tonfanau. They are an asset to the Corps and as far as you are concerned you may rest assured that we are well-satisfied customers."
It is up to you who are following on, to live up to this high standard, to improve upon it, and be a real credit to this, your Regiment, and to yourselves.
