JULY 1961. |
CRICKET NOTES. |
This term cricket has become a hobby and about 30 Junior Leaders attend three nights a week. The Regimental Team is reaching a good standard and has played several matches, particularly good results being a victory over the Infantry Junior Leaders Battalion at Oswestry. The Sergeants' Mess have been defeated, a match in which J/Gnr. Scott made an excellent 73 runs and victory was also gained over an H.Q. Company team. |
There are many promising cricketers in the side and some, including the present captain, J/L/Cpl. Haffenden, will be here next year. J/Cpl. Whittington and J/L/Cpl Broomfield have combined to make a strong attack, and both have played for the senior Regimental team. Whittington distinguished himself by taking 5-40 against the Ceredigion Cricket Club from Aberystwyth. There have been four new colours this term. |
Captain Cormack, who has been in charge of Junior Leader cricket, has been greatly helped by Major Walenn, Capt. Mitchell, Lt. Temporal, 2/Lt. Edwards and C.S.M. Hopkins. |
PERMANENT STAFF XI. |
The Permanent Staff XI have so far had a very successful and interesting season. Captain Mitchell has been in great form with the bat and 2/Lt. Edwards has bowled very fast and very well indeed. Capt. Robinson's name has become a by-word for snapping-up close in-field catches. |
There have been some very close finishes; at Newtown we lost by 10 runs against a team which could field five Montgomery County players and we were defeated at home by Ceredigion Cricket Club by a margin of only five runs, and by Aberystwyth University by one wicket. |
Capt. Mitchell, Lt. Temporal and 2/Lt. Edwards have played for both Merionethshire and Western Command. Lt. Ross was also selected for the Command team. 2/Lt. Edwards tops the bowling averages having taken 24 wickets at an average of seven runs apiece, and at the time of writing the leading batting averages are: 2/Lt. Cohen, five innings - average 26; Lt. Temporal six innings - average 19; Captain Mitchell, seven innings - average 17. |
