Leader Magazine
SUMMER 1962.
HOBBY CLUBS REVIEW.
The range of hobbies offered here never fails to delight the groups of school-boys, who, from time to time, visit the Regiment. A measure of their interest can be had from looking at the complete list of hobbies available to Junior Leaders. In alphabetical order the hobbies are : Aero-modelling, Amateur Radio, Archery, Art and Pottery, Athletics, Basketball, Boxing, the Camera Club, Canoeing, Chess, Cookery, Cricket, Cycling, Fencing, Go-Karting, Gymnastics, Hockey, Leatherwork, Metalwork, Model Boats, Model Electric Cars, Model Railway, Roller-Skating, Rugby, Sailing, .22 Shooting, Soccer, Weightlifting and Woodwork.
To these it is hoped that Magazine Production will be added next term. "The Beetlecrusher", the news-sheet which a team of Junior Leaders have produced in their own time, has been successful. As a result of this, a suggested scheme for a hobby of Magazine Production has been put forward for approval under the Duke of Edinburgh's award scheme. A provisional approval has been given to the first stages and at the moment it is expected that the new hobby will start next term, and may eventually be tied in with the production of "Leader".
VARIED PROGRESS
The existing hobbies proceed successfully. A visitor to the Model Railway and Model Electric Car Hobbies sees intense activity as both hobbies are under-taking major rebuilding schemes. The railway is being extended to include a main terminal station and an airport, whilst a second race car track is being built. This we are told is a "slot track", as distinct from the already existing "rail track".
Looking outwards, the Archery hobby is in the process of applying for membership of the Archery Association, and the Leatherworkers are preparing entries for the Army Arts and Crafts Exhibition in September. The Cycling Club are planning camping expeditions for the weekends in July, and propose to visit Devil's Bridge, Anglesey and the Lleyn Peninsula.
A MESSAGE FROM 'EUPH'
"Euph", who contributed to the first edition of "Leader" (it seems years ago) has submitted the following report from the world of unplain planes and vices that no-one objects to:
"Since our last entry into print quite a few shavings have been burned, and several of the noble order of woodworkers, notably J/RSM Watts, have left us. Our replacements, however, are shaping well, and several of the older hands are sweating on Silver Awards.
We have again been lucky in the matter of machinery, for our original lathe has been replaced by a much handier modern one. No more will Mr. F. lour and gloom over Oliver Cromwell's coffee boiler, though Mr. P., fresh from experiments with turps and beeswax, is pleased to preside over our polishing and finishing on the new model.
The glue still smells as evil as ever, or so our frequent visitors tell us, but possibly the fact that most of us do not notice it, while others positively revel in the reek, would argue our growth from strength to strength. We hope the results of our toil will go some way to verifying this."
Finally, if you have not already caught the strains of "Z" cars, you will know at the end of term why Drum-Major Perris is nowadays known as "Twentyman".
