SUMMER 1964.
'B' COMPANY NOTES.
COMPANY HEADQUARTERS
This Term we welcome Major S.H. Ecott, R.A., from Germany. He takes over from Major C.I.T. Barrow, R.A., who goes to Harrogate after Commanding the Company for four years.
Miss Barbara Actey left during the year after three very loyal and efficient years' service to The Company, and Miss Ann Goodchild has come to take her place as Company Clerk.
Mr. H. Pugh and Mr. J.H. Reeves have now both completed five years of very loyal and efficient service with the Company.
GALLIPOLI
Permanent Staff - Lt. French left us at the end of the spring term on being posted to R.M.A. Sandhurst, at the same time being promoted to Captain. Sgt. Silverside departed soon after to join the Queen's Own Surrey's in Germany.
In their place we welcome to the Platoon Lt. Jackson, Lt. Whyte and Sgt. McHugh, and we hope their stay with us is a pleasant one.
Sport - During the Rugby season the Regimental Team had three regular representatives from the Platoon; J/Sgt. Florence (now with the Devon and Dorsets in N.Ireland) J/Cpl. Toman and J/L/Bdr. Oakes. J/Sgt. Stevens represents the Regiment in cycling.
Rhyl Cup - The Platoon maintained its high standards in the competition with the high lights coming in the winter term when we came first, and the spring term when we came second. Congratulations to the team from all the Platoon.
We were pleased to hear from ex-J/Bdr. Lewis who is with the Gunner Commandos, stationed in Germany, and we ask all graduates to keep in touch and let us know how they get on at Man's Service.
EGYPT PLATOON
It can be said that Egypt Platoon over the past year has really tried to cater for the requirements of Junior Leaders for female company in that it has two crates of "birds" resting in the billet entrance. In fact they outnumber the inmates by two to one. Unfortunately being stuffed, dead, and wearing feathers they do not come up to the usual requirements, but they are gay and any keen ornithologist is welcome to try his hand at identification.
This year has seen the passing of two well known faces in the platoon, those of Sgt. Parry and J/Sgt. Gale. Sgt. Parry finds the change back to "steam" gunnery rather a problem and J/Sgt. Gale, now 7 R.H.A. seems to be spending most of his time leaping out of aircraft. His Regiment is in the new accommodation in Aldershot although its guns, so he tells us, seem to be spread all over the Middle East.
Redecoration in the block is constantly fighting a losing battle with the cracked and flakey walls and every time the garden begins to look presentable, along come the electricians and dig trenches all over it. The comments on this subject are censored.
In the sporting field we had some small success in being cricket semi-finalists, but the soccer team failed to show anything; maybe the injection of new blood will enable us to fare better next season.
SOMME PLATOON
A vintage year with some excellent personal achievements, with the majority of the platoon always striving for better results both G.M.T. and educational. Old boys still in correspondence include Boundy and Evans at Catterick, Fox and Howerth in B.A.O.R., Patterson in Fontainebleau (France) whilst Perry is serving in Aden, and was recently in action against the rebels of Radfan.
During the past year we have been well represented in Regiment sporting events,; Boundy, Bragg in Rugger, Elsey, Miller, Ratchie in Canoeing, Fitzgerald in .22 Shooting, Smith and Kilner in Athletics, Homer in Basketball, and Scotson, Jackson and Mann in Arts and Crafts, and Fox in Cross Country.
Permanent Staff Changes - Sgt. McHugh to Gallipoli, Sgt. Thornton from the Cheshires, Sgt. Winkless and our Platoon Officer, Lt. de Bretton Gordon, will be leaving at the end of the year after 21/2 years at the helm.
Our acres of corridors still glitter, but we are looking for a flock of sheep to keep the grass short.
YPRES PLATOON
On the sports field we have had more than our fair share of success. Despite very strong odds offered by some of the other companies we managed to beat an "A" Company team in the final of the Inter Platoon Football Cup, thinks to some very enlightened play and a small amount of luck. Our cross country team came first in the Company in the Regimental Cross Country run, gaining valuable points for the Company.
The personalities in the Platoon have, naturally, changed a good deal although the character of the Platoon has remained the same. We pride ourselves in having achieved a "Hat Trick" of Junior Company Sergeant Majors, J/C.S.M.s Saunders, Ferguson and Close - three in four terms.
News of ex-members of the Platoon filters through from the outside world from time to time. Ex-J/Leaders McLoughlin and Hiscott are enjoying life in Catterick; ex-J/C.S.M. Ferguson is doing well at the R.M.P. depot in Chichester.
The Permanent Staff side of the Platoon has remained much the same, although there has been rapid growth in numbers. Sgt. Ongley surprised us all by getting married during the summer leave. We welcomed also Sgt. Anderson (Q.O.S.) and Mrs. Anderson into the fold, and hope their stay in rural Wales will be enjoyable.
