SUMMER 1964.
'D' COMPANY NOTES.
The highlight of the past year in this Company has been the recent changeover of Company Commanders. Major C.E.K. Speller, D. & D., has left us to take up an appointment as G11 OPS (PSY) in Borneo, and Major W.J.H. Yeats, R. Sussex, arrived to take over the Company on 8th April, 1964. The Company takes the opportunity to welcome Maj. Yeats to the fold and hopes that his stay will be a happy and enjoyable one. Who knows? We may even become Champion Company. But, back to reality.
We also extend a rather belated welcome to Capt. D.G. Bacon, R.A., who as well as being the Regimental Sports Secretary, Officer i/c First Aid Wing, and Officer i/c Sailing is our Company second i/c. Anyway, he has his own office and a telephone. Capt. Bacon's arrival enabled our "stop gap" second i/c, Capt. Lockett, R.Signals, to return to his first love and take over the duties of Officer i/c Signals Training Wing. We would like to take this opportunity of thanking him for all the hard work he put in, particularly in the field of D. of E. Award records. This work, we hasten to add, is being very ably continued by S/Sgt. (007) K. Thomas, Int.Corps.
Continuing with our almost never-ending list of comings and goings, we welcome our new occupant of the "other place", C.Q.M.S. B. Fourness, R.T.R., and trust his stay will be a pleasant one. If the way he has settled himself in is anything to go by, then I am sure it will be. We have said goodbye, of course to our former "Q", C.Q.M.S. "Alfie" Tubbs, R.T.R., who left us on retirement in April, 1964, and promptly, to every one's surprise, got himself married. He is now happily established in business somewhere in the East End of London. We wish him and his wife the very best of luck.
Lastly, we said a reluctant goodbye to our popular, hard working Company Clerk, Miss Brebda Davies, who left us on 8th May, 1964, to take up employment nearer home. We are very happy to say that Brenda became engaged to Sgt. Tom Silverside, late of "B" Company. We wish both of them the very best of everything - and look forward to an invitation to the wedding. Mrs. Skinner has now taken up the typewriter on our behalf and we extend to her a warm welcome and trust she will not have too much trouble in learning our AAJLR Language: D of E, Inters, Inf Tacs Conts, Classroom Dress, and so on.
Apart from these changes, the Company has enjoyed a quiet, unspectacular year, getting on with its job of producing the future Warrant Officers and Senior N.C.O.s of the British Army.

DETTINGEN PLATOON
This last year has been a very full and active one, with hardly an idle moment. Last summer we went a our own to Cader Idris to get away from it all. Everyone enjoyed camping out and taking part in a map reading and initiative exercise. This was considered to be good value.
The autumn term saw the platoon engaged in many activities. The first was the Cross Country competition. After training hard for four weeks we did creditably by finishing 7th out of 16. The Shooting competition followed, and in this Dettingen was 4th. Another 7th place was gained in the Rhyl Cup. The final competition during autumn was the Football competition. We did well, representing the Company in the semi-finals.
Individuals did well in Regimental activities. Pride of place must go to Brandie, who with his partner won several contests at canoeing. Crozier and Hanson also canoed for the Regiment. Lamb and Rowsell fenced for the Regiment and helped it to finish second in the Army Junior Competition. Edge was a star in the Regimental Football side, and Blake did equally well in the Rugby XV.
The spring term was, thankfully, not as harsh as the previous one. Once again there were many competitions, and in all Dettingen finished well in the first half. Shooting again proved to be our strongest aspect and we came fourth. Individuals did the Company and Regiment proud. Six members of the platoon helped the Company to win at Hockey. Warren and Marchant were excellent small bore shots and played a large part in the Regiment winning several Army contests. Hanson and Baker played for the Regimental Hockey XI. Judo started as a new sport this term, and we soon had our enthusiasts. Poulter and Maclean did very well and gained Yellow Belts. Veck, Reading and Elston helped the Regiment to reach the semi-finals of the Junior Army Boxing Competition. For their efforts, Reading and Veck gained their Colours.
A welcome break from Tonfanau was provided by a visit to Menai. This was very relaxing, though the climb to the top of the highest mountain in Wales, Snowdon, proved very strenuous. Even more strenuous work was provided for Crozier, Whenlock and Andrews, who attended the Army Outward Bound School course. Andrews did particularly well and was accorded a "B" grading.
Regimental colours were gained during the year by: Edge, football; Blake, rugby; Hanson, hockey; Lamb and Rowsell, fencing; Veck and Reading, boxing; Brandie and Crozier, canoeing; Marchant and Warren, shooting.
CAMBRAI PLATOON
The past year has been eventful for Cambrai, particularly in sport. We have also lost many old friends and gained some new ones. We lost Sgt. White, R.P.C., who left us on promotion; he was replaced by Sgt. Dodgson. We see from the newspapers that an ex-member, Signalman Wishart, is enjoying life in Bangkok, billeted in the best hotel on the Army!
We won the inter-Platoon Cricket Cup in the summer, followed it up with the Cross Country Cup, and by winning the Rhyl Cup in the Easter term, we gained the distinction of holding three regimental cups. During the year we had four members in the Regimental Cross Country team: Holman, Clarke, Hencher and Avery; two team captains, Snelling (hockey) and Sibary (shooting); the left and right wing of the Football XI; and one I.S.B.A. boxing champion in Tich Turner, who boxed against Wales and won his bout. Altogether we had eighteen Regimental sportsmen.
WATERLOO PLATOON
On the whole the past year has been uneventful. However, the Platoon has proved itself to be a veritable goldmine in producing the Junior "Top Brass" in the Company chain of command. J/R.S.M. Robson, J/C.S.M. Astbury and J/C.S.M. designate Wiseman.
J/Sgt. Richardson, J/Cpl. "Legs" Spencer and J/Gnr. Edgar attended courses at the Army Outward Bound School each receiving better than average results.
The platoon enjoyed a weekend under canvas at Bala in March, the only casualty being Sgt. Pitchford who refuses to do any more Night Compass Marches unless allowed too have the full use of his own torch. (Captain Lockett please note!)
We welcome to the platoon, J/Sigs. Bilton, Craig, Harrison, J/Ptes. Larmour and Pearman and have good reason to believe that they will bring honour to the platoon in the field of sport.
We take this opportunity to extend a warm welcome to our new O.C. Company, Major W.J.H Yeats, R. Sussex, and to the new "Q", S.Q.M.S. Fourness, R.T.R. (who can always be contacted c/o Aberdovey Golf Club!). By the time these notes have gone to press we will have said goodbye to Sgt. "Dusty" Miller, Int.Corps.
MINDEN PLATOON
The following are events of note which have occurred over the past three terms in the platoon.
The achievements in Minden Platoon have come almost entirely from sport.
Winter Term, 1963
Boxing - Minden Platoon had four of the Regimental Boxing Team in Benson, Hagen, Dyer and Bates.
Shooting - Rooney won the cup for the Best Shot in the Regiment.
Lt. Murray took over the platoon from Lt. Theis in December.
Spring Term, 1964
Boxing - Minden had further successes in Thompson, Bates and Hagen. Bates became Western Command Champion in his class; so too did Thompson and Hagen. Thompson went on to become the Army Junior Boxing Champion in his class.
Hockey - Russell played as a regular in the Regimental Hockey XI.
Rugby - Daffern played as a regular in the Regimental Rugby First XV and Field and Thompson in the Second XV.
Summer Term, 1964
Athletics - In the Inter Company Athletics Meeting Daffern won the 220 yards sprint, Benson won the 440 yards sprint, Russell came second in the high jump and Daffern, Benson, Vickers were members of the relay team which came second.
Boxing - During the spring holidays Thompson boxed his way through the I.S.B.A. Junior Championships and in April through the Midland Counties Championships to the A.B.A. Junior Championships at the Royal Albert Hall. In a very close fight, he was beaten on points in the final of his class.
