Leader Magazine
SUMMER 1965.
'A' COMPANY NOTES.
IMPHAL PLATOON
1965 has seen the departure of S/Sgt Cummings on promotion to be CSM of "C" Company. We wish him well and thank him for all his efforts on behalf of the Platoon. Also having left at is Sgt Brooking, who has gone to Germany. In their place we welcome Sgts James and Waugh. Due to the run-down of the Regiment, we also welcome seven new members of the Platoon from Knightsbridge (now disbanded).
Currently in No. 1 spot is J/Sgt Bonewell with 3 stripes, and sharing the No. 2 position, J/Cpls Burrow and Wade with 2 tapes each. Also in the top seven are J/L/Cpls Gordon, Oliver and Haley with J/L/Bdr Pickersgill.
Our Rhyl Cup results have varied. Last winter we were 5th and in the Easter Term 15th, mainly due to poor map reading. However last winter we did manage to record the highest Platoon score in the Inter Company Shoot.
The following members have represented, or are representing the Regiment at sport: Gymnastics - J/Sgt Bonewell; Sailing - J/Cpl Burrow, J/Fus Heales; Cricket - J/Rfn Sharpe and J/Pte Lay; Full Bore Shooting - J/Pte Medland; Hockey - J/Pte Lewis; Basketball - J/Cpl Wade, J/Sig Miller; Athletics - J/Sig James, J/L/Cpl Haley.
"The One That Didn't Get Away" - earlier this summer Heales was involved in landing the biggest catch see at Aberdovey for years. Being a Junior Leader, he makes it his business to pull on every rope he sees. One particular rope when pulled too hard revealed a body on the end. Unflustered, the Junior Leaders concerned played with this for some time before eventually reporting it. They now say to Heales, "You're not the only fish in the sea!"
KNIGHTSBRIDGE PLATOOON
Although this Platoon has now been disbanded, it ended on a good note. Cpl Cowley passed his Regular Commissions Board and is now undergoing officer training. Several boys who are now in other platoons have attended the AOBS and all have had above average gradings.
FALAISE PLATOON
Since the most recent events are clearest, the only memory that really sticks in the mind is decorating. We decided that we would decorate our own billets. It has been impossible to estimate the percentage of paint and paper that actually went on the walls, but we believe it to be at least equal to the national average.
During the Spring Term J/Pte Sharrock did extremely well in boxing; he was awarded his Regimental Colours.
BALACLAVA PLATOON
In the past year, Balaclava has seen some vast changes in the Platoon and Company. We welcomed the arrival of Lt Rogerson, PWO, in the month of June and at the same time we said goodbye to Sgt Cox, R.Sigs, who left after a very interesting term at Tonfanau. After a short break from the Unit, we welcomed back Sgt Bishop, R.Sigs into the Platoon. We retain and respect the presence of Sgt Hill. RCT, for yet another term in the Platoon's life.
Since the last issue of the Leader was produced, we have had one or two quite outstanding feats. In the past year we have sent 6 Junior Leaders to the Army Outward Bound School, 4 of whom gained "B" gradings and 2 gained "C" gradings.
This term we hope to gain a better position in the Rhyl Cup and still retain first position in the Company.

Last term J/L/CpIs Finlayson and Barker represented the Regiment at Cross Country at Aldershot and were well placed.
In boxing J/L/Cpl Finlayson and J/Pte Parkinson represented the Regiment in the Army Team Championships at Dover, and winning two out of his three bouts J/L/Cpl Finlayson gained his Regimental Colours.
Maintaining the fencing ability within the platoon, J/Sgt Jones (Capt), J/Ptes Ashbrook (present Capt), Binyon, McClure and J/Sig Clapham have represented the Regiment at Oswestry and Aldershot and have brought credit to the platoon.
J/CSM Bradley and J/Pte Hicks have represented the Regiment at 7.62 Shooting, both being marksmen, and maintained a high standard.
Last term, in the Company Shooting Competition, J/Pte Grant, who is now attached to the Royal Engineers, was the best shot in the Regiment.
J/Pte McClure (Paddy) played in the Western Command Golf Championships at Delamere Forest in Cheshire in May. He won the Foursomes with Captain Little, RAEC and they received a polished ash-tray and a dozen golf balls each.
We have done well in the last year and hope to even better our efforts in the forthcoming year.
