In Memoriam
  James Robert Birchall
1 Royal Northumberland Fusiliers
Died 20th. February 2002

It is with regret and sadness that I have to inform you of the death of Corporal Bob Birchall my best mate for 38 years who suddenly passed away on the 20th of February 2002 aged 53 years.

Bob joined the army in 1964 and served as a Junior Leader in the AAJLR at Tonfanau North Wales. In 1966 he joined the 1st Battalion of the Royal Northumberland Fusiliers then stationed in Kirton in Lindsey and in September of that year aged only 17½ Bob saw 9 months active service in Aden with Z Company. On returning to the UK he spent his next few years doing numerous emergency tours in Northern Ireland. In 1971 Gibraltar was to be his home for three years before again returning to Northern Ireland this time as a member of the Battalions intelligence section. His next port of call was Cyprus serving with the UN before his return to the UK as a training Corporal and final demob in 1979 after 14 years 184 days exemplary service.

After leaving the army Bob returned to Ashington went to work for the United Bus Company now Arriva and served with them for 23 years, throughout his military and civilian service Bob gained the respect admiration of everyone he worked with.

For many years Bob took an active part in running the Ashington branch of the Fusilier association and was always willing to lend a hand and could be depended on to cheer everyone up with his wit repartee and practical jokes, Bob was also very proud to be the standard bearer for our New St Georges Standard.

To Julia and all of Bob's family all of us in the Fusiliers Association offer you our deepest and sincere condolences. Bob will always be remembered with respect and affection.
