DECEMBER 1960.
PROFILE
THE JUNIOR REGIMENTAL SERGEANT-MAJOR
Junior Regimental Sergeant-Major R.G. Davies came to the Regiment on 6 May 1959, and was a member of the first Cambrai intake, although he is now attached to Waterloo for the purposes of training. Like most good soldiers, he comes from Yorkshire, and went to School in Holmfirth near Huddersfield.
Upon leaving school he applied for the Navy, but was found to have a slight colour-blindness, and therefore was not accepted. Whilst with the Regiment, he has played hockey and cricket for regimental teams and also taken part in athletics.
In the Easter term this year he won prizes for weapon training, and for the best RAC recruit. At the AOBS he got a grading of B plus.
One of our undercover reporters, sent to get a personal interview, found that although J/RSM Davies when at home lives in a pub, he is a teetotaller and a non-smoker. Of his friends and acquaintances he said that being RSM has made some small differences; some people who were friendly before now shied away, whilst others seemed friendly just because of his position. To the majotity, however it had made little difference.
As J/RSM, he does not have to make a bed pack, nor does he get locker inspections. But our reporter noticed a very smart top kit by his bunk.
He attained the rank of J/WO1 in the middle of September, this year, and will leave the regiment at Easter, to join the 9th/12th Lancers, at present in Northern Ireland.
