Leader Magazine
WINTER 1961.
AN OLD SOLDIER REMEMBERS ...
BATTERY WILL MOVE BY ROAD.
We are moving by road. It is a dusty road. There are forty vehicles in our convoy. And five bullock-carts. The bullock carts are in front.
They have been in front for some time. We have come to know every detail of them. The drivers are friendly fellows. They turn and smile at us. They utter hoarse cries of encouragement to their plodding beasts. So do we. Only our cries are hoarser. And coarser.
Here comes a man on a bicycle. He is cycling in the centre of the road. He is cycling on the left of the road. He is cycling on the right of the road. He is cycling on the river. He has stopped cycling ....
Here is a village. How picturesque. Everyone is asleep in the High Street. Here is the village store. It is booming. Here is Gunner Golightly's three-tonner. It is knocking. It has struck the village store. Only soft goods now remain.
We stop. We interview the owner. We offer him apologies. We offer him money. We offer him Gunner Golightly. He accepts the money.
We proceed. Here is a D.R. from the front of the column. Gunner Wotherspoon has got stuck on the hill. Tomorrow he will get stuck on the peg.
We press on. We have overtaken the bullock carts. We have caught up with some goats. The goats are caught up with us.
Here is a river beside the road. How romantic. And here are some villagers fishing. What are they fishing for? They are fishing for Gunner Wotherspoon. Where is Gunner Wotherspoon's three-tonner? It is in the drink.
Where are the rations? Most of them are in Gunner Wotherspoon's three-tonner. And the remainder? They are in Gunner Wotherspoon.
There are thirty-nine vehicles in our convoy. And fifteen bullock carts. The bullock carts are in front. These bullocks are slower. The light is getting tricky. The road is getting bumpy. The Major's getting nasty.
We are still climbing. Here is a sharp bend. The road falls away steeply to the valley. So does Gunner Golightly's three-tonner. There are thirty-eight vehicles in our convoy ....
