The Sailing Club Cub mingles with canoeists at Aberdovey
J/Sgt. MATHESON ‘D’ Company.
There are about thirty Junior Leaders in the Sailing Hobby. In a year, approximately half the time is spent on the maintenance of the boats and the second half on the actual sailing. The maintenance of the boats means that they have all got to be taken back from Aberdovey to Tonfanau and completely stripped of all their gear. Then it is only a matter of replacing parts and repainting them. In the summer, the more pleasant aspect of the hobby comes along -- the actual sailing. Steps are taken to ensure that all the Junior Leaders in the hobby go sailing at least once, if not twice, each week.
Before being allowed to sail, however each person had to be initiated in the correct handling of, and the procedure in, a sailing craft. This is a very important aspect of sailing as one has to have his wits about him from the time he leaves the shore until he touches it again.
There is always bound to be some excitement when there is a strong wind blowing, but there is no actual danger because, whether or not a person can swim, he must wear life jacket at all times. The hobby is also in possession of a rescue launch, equipped with radio, which is alwayswithin a reasonable distance in case of trouble.
There are nine boats in the hobby at present and another one is almost completed. They have not, for some time competed in official races, but it is hoped that this will be done by the end of the term.
Altogether it is a very exciting hobby. If one is willing to put in some work on the maintenance during the winter for the summer, then it is a hobby well worth joining.
